FAQ

Is this guide for Outposts Unknown or Voyager: Across the Unknown?
Outposts Unknown only—the Magic Fuel colony builder (Steam app 3469910). Star Trek: Voyager – Across the Unknown is a separate Daedalic survival-strategy title with its own demo on Steam.
How many starting beacons must I find?
The 12 June 2026 demo patch notes say you only need one of three starting beacons to complete the explore objective (Pacing & Bugfixing Demo Update). Magic Fuel has not posted a separate note for the 20 Oct 2026 release—treat one-of-three as likely but not re-confirmed for 1.0.
Why do crew ride shuttles instead of beaming?
Official demo patch notes state the in-game Shifts guide better explains shuttle travel between the ship and planet. Devlog #1 adds night shifts tied to the Resonant in orbit—surface work is organized around day/night and transport, not constant transporter use.
What upkeeps do buildings need?
Captain’s Devlog #3 (9 Sep 2026) states buildings require water, power, and compute, and that pipes/conduits consume layout space. Devlog #4 mentions more than 55 distinct resources in the full economy.

Last verified: 2026-10-21. Primary sources: Captain’s Devlog #3 (9 Sep 2026), Devlog #4 (16 Oct 2026), demo patch 12 Jun 2026, and the Steam store page.

Title check: This wiki covers Star Trek: Outposts Unknown (outpost builder, Playstack). It is not Star Trek: Voyager – Across the Unknown (survival strategy on the Voyager).

You begin as captain of the U.S.S. Resonant, sent into the X’Lehari System to help local worlds while investigating the Tetryon Rift—a narrative hook repeated in launch and demo announcements. Gameplay is a real-time colony builder with pause (genre standard; see press descriptions on /guides/is-it-worth-it/) focused on research outposts, not a permanent civilian city.

New players should learn three loops first: surface logistics (water / power / compute), crew shifts and shuttles, and story-driven exploration across planets—starting with Daegus in both demo and full game announcements.

What is your first hour supposed to look like?

Official demo copy (June 2026 announcement) describes roughly three hours of narrative on Daegus: crew selection across Command, Engineering, Medical, Navigation, Science, and Security, then early resource chains and planning.

Practical opener aligned with multiple official hints:

  1. Follow the survey / explore objective — After the June 2026 demo patch, only one of three starting beacons is required to complete the initial explore goal (patch note; full-game reconfirmation pending).
  2. Establish basic extraction — The same patch speeds metal collection and points the starting camera at a metal-rich area (demo QoL; likely retained but not itemized for 1.0).
  3. Plan three upkeeps — Devlog #3: buildings need water, power, and compute; conduit routing consumes tiles—sketch pipes before you sprawl.
  4. Use the build-order checklist — Structure priority (Operation Center, power, landing pad, metal collector) is detailed in /guides/first-outpost-build-order/ from cross-source guides; this page stays at mission level.

How do day, night, and crew shifts work?

Devlog #1 (thank-you post after demo downloads) introduces night shifts: you assign who works days vs nights, while the Resonant supports crew off-duty. Rock Paper Shotgun’s demo report (June 2026) describes crew returning to the ship at night for rest—consistent with official shift messaging.

The 12 June 2026 patch says the Shifts guide now explains why crew use shuttles between ship and planet (the official Kourou reveal narration says periodic Tetryon Rift radiation endangers transport technology, which is the in-fiction backdrop—refer to the in-game guide for exact wording).

Management tips with official backing:

  • Watch fatigue and morale as sim pillars (store page and Devlog #3 encounter framing).
  • Schedule night-specific content — Devlog #4 mentions POIs that appear at night and better shift tracking (pre-launch polish note).
  • Deeper shift tactics: /guides/crew-shifts-and-morale/.

What should you know about logistics and resources?

Devlog #3 is the clearest official primer:

  • 55+ unique resources (Devlog #3; Devlog #4 repeats “55 unique resources” for tooltip work).
  • Three upkeep utilities: water, power, compute—must reach buildings through pipes/conduits that take space.
  • Ecology: harvested biological samples include seeds to replant, minimizing permanent environmental damage (Devlog #3 fiction/design intent).

For wiring and routing discipline, read /guides/logistics-power-water-compute/. For planet-specific hazards, use /worlds/daegus-walkthrough/ once you leave the tutorial mood of Daegus.

Which worlds exist beyond Daegus?

Official devlogs name three gameplay planets in the X’Lehari System:

Planet Official note
Daegus Temperate starting world in demo and announcements
Kourou Ice/fire extremes; Devlog #2 gameplay reveal
Neral “Most hostile” in Devlog #3; three biomes

The full game ships the broader story across these settings; the demo stayed on Daegus (~3 h). Compare scope in /guides/demo-vs-full-game/.

What quality-of-life fixes should beginners know?

From the 12 June 2026 demo patch (check if still true in your build; not re-listed at launch):

  • Faster resupplies with smaller bundles (crew hiring pace).
  • Cheaper, faster early buildings.
  • Faster rock investigation, especially for Science officers.
  • Crew overview button moved closer to the main view.

Devlog #4 pre-launch notes: resource tooltips, storage organization, mostly free/instant network infrastructure, and balance passes on walk vs harvest times. Treat these as likely in 1.0 but not individually confirmed in the 21 Oct launch post.
